Apple Unveils Its AI Framework, Apple Intelligence, Alongside New Operating Systems and Features

At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, its AI framework that powers a range of new features across its family of operating systems, including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS 15 (Sequoia). The developer beta for iOS 18 is now available, with public betas for the other operating systems set to be released later this year.

AirPods and TVOS Updates

In the lead-up to WWDC, several significant topics emerged, centering on the underlying architecture of Apple's operating systems and legal challenges faced by the company. Among these updates were enhancements to AirPods and TVOS.

• AirPods are set to receive expanded gesture support, including the ability to recognize head nods, and personalized Spatial Audio for gaming with developer support, starting with Need for Speed.
• The new TVOS features include an expanded library of content for Apple TV+, such as Presumed Innocent, Fly Me To the Moon, new seasons of Silo, Lady in the Lake, Shrinking, Wolfs, The Instigators, Bad Monkey, and Severance.
• Home and TVOS now offer InSight information, improved audio clarity, 21:9 projector aspect ratios, and Peanuts licensing for screensavers.

Apple Intelligence: A Powerful AI Framework

Apple Intelligence brings advanced AI capabilities to all of Apple's operating systems, driving new features such as text summaries, drafting, image personalization, sketching, animation, and illustration. Developers can now incorporate AI and App Intents support using the new programmer kit, with code completion and other development tools integrated into Apple's coding software apps.

The AI framework can automatically build Actions based on user context, similar to Microsoft's Copilot Plus Recall. Apple emphasizes on-device processing to ensure user privacy and security, employing a hybrid cloud-plus-local model for more complex requests. Custom Apple silicon-powered servers have been developed to manage the security and privacy throughout the entire pipeline.
